With Flood conditions prevailing, and the complications caused by the construction works at Walton Bridge, we were lucky to be able to run the event at all. There were going to be some very difficult water conditions for everyone racing and difficult decisions to make for those of us organising.
We would like to thank all clubs that took part, and give particular thanks to all the coaches and helpers who volunteered to help us provide an adequate safety and rescue service. A special mention for the Richmond coaches who turned out in force, to George Barnicoat whose sympathetic assistance to the ladies at the downstream turn of 7/8/9, was much appreciated (by them !) and to Madi Barnicoat who gave up her race position to assist her fellow paddlers who capsized.
Thanks too, to all the Elmbridge volunteers who worked so hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly and all services were available when needed.. the food, the information, communication and of course the results .
There were some very happy but exhausted competitors coming off the water, tired but pleased to have risen to the challenge. Elmbridge had their fair share of capsizes but generally our results were excellent with a total of seven promotions.
It was good to see Ben Brown and Ed Rutherford back racing at the club, especially as they took first and second places in Div1 K1, followed by Phil in 4th position. In Div2 Glenn was 2nd and then an excellent performance by Kayne in 3rd. Eliot and Luke were on form in Div4.They were 2nd and 4th and both promoted to Div3. Katherine led this race for much of the way, looking like an easy win, but unfortunately capsized and had to settle for 5th place, followed by Tim in 6th, Elise in 8th and Stefano in 9th place.
Division 5 included five Elmbridge paddlers in a field of eight. Peter Scarr and Katie were 1st and 2nd (and promoted to 4). Jenny 4th Becky Solway 5th, Niki 7th and Berta 8th. Nicky Hadland in Div 7 just managed to avoid a disaster on the first turn and went on to take 5th place gaining his promotion to Div6. Sean was 8th in this large field of 24 boats. You are creeping up the field Sean !
Georgina, Roz and Liz were our representatives in Div8. Roz in 4th just missed promotion.. Georgina 6th. Liz 11th. Ender in his first real Div9 race came a very creditable 2nd and Georgia, after a season of determined racing effort was 4th. Both were promoted. Also, a special “well done” to Bex Shantry who, in her first race as a beginner this year took 5th place in a field of 20 and only missed promotion by 20 seconds; a determined effort from Aisling finishing in 13th place.
The doubles events were very poorly supported and it was necessary to combine Div 7/8/9 K2, a race in which Wendy and Kellie in spite of thinking that their end was nigh, managed 3rd place .. with encouragement from the above mentioned George. A delighted Amy and Alfie won Div6 K2 in spite of it being the first time they had ever portaged. Alfie certainly won smile of the day prize with his Dad running a close second! Derek and Richard took second in Div4/5 combined K2.
The beginners and Lightning races were accompanied by a legion of minders in case of capsize.. thanks again minders .. and all survived well. In the U.16 beginners event Emma Trevellyan was highest placed Elmbridge paddler in 3rd followed by Louise and a rather wet Sophia. Well done girls we were proud of you!
