The championships were held in a beautiful country park and were well organised by Norwich Canoe Club who had amassed a huge team of volunteer helpers to ensure that everything was taken care of. In spite of weather conditions being stormy wet and windy at times we did enjoy some sun and generally the weekend was enjoyed by all
This event is quite different from our regional divisional races where we race in ability ranked divisions within our local regions. At this event the competitors race in age groups, males and females separated and literally come from all over the country. It was quite a daunting new experience for some, especially as there were often as many as 30 boats on the start line.
There are classes for all age groups from Under 10 to over 75 but only our junior members chose to go and compete (5 boys and 10 girls). They are to be congratulated for earning a 4th best club position in the final league table of overall results.
Amy Ward was star of our team, winning the U18 K1 and, with Rebbi (who flew back from Hungary for the event), the U18 K2. In both cases they were far and away the best boat, winning both races by huge margin and now hold two prestigious trophies.
They have gained themselves places in the GB Marathon Team going to Rome for the World Championships in September. Amy will be paddle K1 and will pair with Rebbi in K2 . Well done girls !
In U18 boys Bruce and Harry were placed 7th and 11th in the K1 respectively and 6th in K2. Working down the age groups,
Under 16 boys K1: Kayne, Ross and Elliot took 9th 14th and 18th positions: Ross and Elliot were very competitive in the K2 race taking 7th place.
Under 16 girls
Elise, Jenny, Roberta and Amy were placed 5th,11th,13th& 14th. In k1
In the K2 race Roberta/Jenny were 6th.
Under 14 boys K1 Kayne 5th.
Under 14 girls K1.. A great race ! our three girls .. Nicky, Becky and Rebecca W. came in one behind the other in 5th,6th & 7th places.
In K2 Nicky and Rebecca raced in to the finish line, just taking 2nd from the Nottingham crew. Becky teamed up with Georgina to give her her first taste of K2 racing. They did well to make 7th place.
