Hasler Final -Reading Canoe Club 2013

The final!  The last contest of the 2013 season.

The sun shone all day, and over 700 paddlers from 32 clubs gathered from across the country to compete for this historic and prestigious trophy.

Thanks to Reading who organised the programme which worked so well, and ran an excellent event overall.

Our club has won the trophy 14 times during its 30 year history, but this time it was not to be. In spite of some very good results, our efforts were only good enough to make 5th place.  25 points behind Norwich,  Winners for the second year running and our close rivals for the last five years.

In this competition, where each club team scores its best six K1 results and the best three K2 results. (Scoring from across all divisions 1-9) it is impossible to estimate throughout the days racing who will win until the last race has finished.

Reading did a grand job on the organisation and we did not have to wait long for the final result.

The highlights for us were:-

A great K2 win for Ross/Harry in Div 2 K2

Ross & Harry Hasler Finals 2013

“The Committee” Cup for the highest placed junior women K1 in the highest division and the “David Shankland trophy” for the Senior or junior women K1 with the fastest time over the 12 mile course went to Elise Piercy

Elise Hasler Finals 2013

2nd. in Div.1 K1 , Ed Rutherford

3rd place & promotion for Niki Hadland in 5 K1

Nick Hasler Finals 2013

4th place and promotion for Bex in Div 7

Bex & James Hasler Finasl 2103

Two of our very junior K2s contributed to our final score,

Amy/Alfie in Div 6 and Georgia/Georgina in Div 8. Whilst our great contingent in Div 2 and Div3 K1  Bruce, Kayne and Luke made up a good proportion of the K1 score added to Ed, Niki and Bex.

Many thanks to all of you who tried so hard and we should express our sympathy for those who bravely continued their race after an early swim. It takes a lot of courage to survive a 50 boat K2 start and luck.

BCU Junior National Championship Sprint Regatta 13th & 14th April 2013

The 1st of the Sprint Regattas took place at the weekend, the BCU Junior National Championship. A team of Junior and Senior Elmbridge paddlers travelled up to Nottingham. The day started off with bright sunshine and not a ripple on the water. Of course this is Nottingham and the weather doesn’t stay calm for long. The wind picked up, but more so on the Sunday, testing all the attendees whether on the water or watching from the side, but after such a wet winter nothing was going to stop our members from making a mark on the podium. Well done to all our paddlers for competing especially Stefano, Kayne (Under 16 boys)  and Ross ( Under 18 boys) who were the youngest in their age categories  and thanks to our team leader, Fran, for all her hard work.

The following Elmbridge members were presented with the following awards at the Regatta, congratulations to :-

Hasler Finals 2012

This event is the “grand finale” of the British marathon racing year: throughout the season, paddlers in clubs all around the country have been competing in their regional events in the hopes of qualifying to take part in this final. The trophy has a particular significance to the canoeing fraternity as it was donated to the BCU  to commemorate the wartime operation of  Colonal Hasler and the “Cockleshell Heroes” who raided enemy shipping on the Gironde.(from canoes !)

Elmbridge was one of the four clubs qualifying from the London & SE Region, the others being Richmond, Tonbridge and Wey. Last year we won, bringing our total of wins in this competition to thirteen. This year, in spite of our team being well up to standard and putting in some really excellent performances we slipped to second place .. just one point behind Norwich (Eastern region) with  Chelmsford in third place. The club scores were all very close, and it was impossible to pick out a top club until the final scores were produced.

(NOR 218   ELM 217  CLM 214)

Our team included a complete cross section of the membership .. Mums, Dads, lots of 12-16 year olds and some of our most experienced senior paddlers .. as well as Amy the fastest junior girl in the British Marathon Team. There’s no doubt that everyone did their best and it was a shame that a damaged rudder, an unfortunate capsize or a quirk of the rules robbed us of the 2 points we needed to win, but it’s all in the game and we’ll try again next year !

Although we only had two wins ( Derek in Div 5 K1 and Roberta/Niki in Div 6 K2) most of our boats finished in the top six in their races which is no mean feat when you line up with 35 boats. Many thanks to all of you who made the effort and who put in so much training to keep our club at the top of the list .
