Royal Hasler 24th June

This is our most local race in SE Hasler region ; probably because of this we managed to persuade far more of you to come and race; we fielded twice as many Elmbridge paddlers this week than last, and they certainly made an impact!  We still did not manage to be the top club, but were runners up to Richmond, only 3 points behind.

Due to windy conditions being forecast, and this stretch of river between Hampton Court and Teddington having a reputation for being rough, we had more K2s racing . Alfie and Archie (newcomers on the scene) confidently won Div.9 K2 and both promoted to Div.8. Louise and Conner (also his first race) had a good win in Div.8 K2 and also both promoted to Div.7, with Wendy and Kellie following in 4th place.

Rebeka W. and Niki made their debut appearance in Div 6 and did well to come in 6th , 3min behind the leaders. Toni Lufkin and Derek made a welcome return to racing and secured us  2nd place in Div 5 K2. and Tim and Ollie (their annual appearance as a duo) claimed another Div 4.

The 12 mile K1 races were very challenging for our talented juniors. Kayne faced his first  Div.2 race, but tenaciously hung on to the front group of four to claim 4th place behind Richard in 3rd. All four paddlers crossed the line within 8 seconds. Ross in Div 3 raced 12 miles for the first time and found completing the course a bit of a challenge.

Phil. won his Div1 K1 race for the 5th consecutive time. Luke and Elise came 7th and 10th in Div 4. Stef was 6th in Div 5 :Ardash claimed 3rd in Div 7 and Sean 3rd in Div 8.

So !! Lots of good results and very few disasters.
The Hasler League Table now reads :-
Wey 42 : Elmbridge 40 : Richmond  40 : Tonbridge 37: Royal 35

Its VERY close. We need you all out there for Tonbridge and Richmond races in order to secure a definite place in the top 4 clubs to go on to the final  (which we won last year)

Elmbridge Club Relay & BBQ

Saturday saw the club hosting its annual club relay after the training session. The weather held & 4 teams of 3 K1’s & a K2 competed against each other, with a lap around the large island, relaying a number board with a designated runner. Numbers were slightly down this year with people having other commitments, but everyone still seemed to have fun. A number of boats were very keen in their approach to the landing stage, & with the water level still high managed to surf onto it. The winning team was lead by Glenn Thorogood, who seems to have won the last couple of club relay races. His paddlers were Ross McMullen & Conner Ward in K1’s,  & Rebekah Solway & Georgia Philippou in K2. Whilst the event was running the BBQ was fired up & burgers were cooked to round off the lovely afternoons entertainment. Thanks to the runners, coaches, cooks & parents in helping to organise the event & the paddlers for entertaining us all.

Maidstone Hasler 17th June 2012

It was touch & go whether this race was held due to the previous weeks rain fall & the impending rain that had been predicted on the Friday & Saturday before. But we were lucky, the poor weather forecast was not to be & Sundays race went ahead. Even the sun came out, catching most of us unprepared in the sudden warmth of the day. Elmbridge had a good core of paddlers in K1’s, with Philip Thorogood winning his 4th Div 1 race in a row,

keep it up Philip. Harry Archer, Glenn Thorogood & Richard Ockendon respectively came 1st, 2nd & 3rd in Div 2. Kayne Wilkinson was a amazing in Div 3 & came 3rd with a promotion to Div 2, well done.

Amy Ward had a swim but completed most of the race for training purposes for Copenhagen & retired. Both Elise Piercy & Eliot Solway raced in their first Div 4 race & came 7th & 8th, & Stefan di Gregorio in his first Div 5 rce came 4th.

Jenny Withers was close to promotion in Div 6 & came 3rd. Our final paddlers in Div 7 Nicole Dawes, Rebecca Williams  & Steve Williams held their ground & came 2nd, 4th & 14th, Steve, unfortunately had a swim, but both Nicole & Rebecca gained promotions to Div 6, well done girls. Next race Royal CC, lets have a bigger turn out.

They have a number of ICF, IOC, BCU and Olympic competitors attending and would very much like to invite as many Elmbridge Canoe Club members to come. The race has a downstream start below Kingston bridge, fully buoyed turns and should mark an exciting end to the Olympic Games.

Nottingham Regatta June

The weekend started on Friday night with gale force winds and a challenge to keep campsite tents, particularly the Solway’s, pinned to the ground, (although hotel roofs did not seem to be affected). Followed by strong headwinds for the paddlers to tackle on Saturday, and ended on Sunday with brilliant sunshine, plus a few regrets regarding lack of sunscreen, but lots of fun and plenty of tiddlywinks to take home.

Congratulations to all who participated in this month’s Nottingham National Sprint Regatta, (apologies if we have not named all of you); with Elmbridge getting a plethora of good results in all categories specifically: Girls A –with Amy Ward winning the 1000m, Rebi Simon the 500m and 200m and both girls winning all their K2 finals. The boys A included some exciting racing from Harry Archer. The boys B, C and D races were a great success for the club, with multiple victories from Kayne Wilkinson, Stefano Di-Gregorio, Eliot Solway (racing in Div C for the first time), Adarsh Heaton and Ross McMullen (racing in Div B for the first time) and coming 1st in his heat. Girls D proved a promising future for our female athletes with many 1st and 2nd places.  Louise Thorogood joined Nottingham for the first time, enabling a full Elmbridge K4 crew to be reckoned with, including Roberta Lufkin, Rebekah Solway and Nicky Dawes. A wobbly start in the 1000m gave them 2nd place, but not so in the 500m where they took a convincing 1st place, with the commentator mentioning the prestigious training given at Elmbridge Canoe Club. Due to the conditions we only had one promotion, Kayne to Boys B, well done to him for his promotion. Thank you to all the organisers who make this event possible.

Longridge Hasler Marathon Sunday June 3rd 2012

Although this race is not in our region, it is held very close to home on a pleasant reach of the Thames near Marlow. The race was well attended and offered good competition in all divisions. We had a successful day out with our group of 14 paddlers.

Phil won his third Div.1 race in succession, and Glenn and Richard O were 2nd and 3rd respectively in Div 2.

Ross paddled magnificently throughout, won division 4 with an exciting sprint at the finish… and a promotion. One of the older paddlers in his race was so impressed he even came and congratulated us on Ross’ racing skills. In the same race Tim came 6th and narrowly missed promotion on a technicality.

Luke and Elise were at the front of their Div.5 race all the way, taking 2nd and third places … and a promotion each.

Div.6 – Stef, really proved himself on this one ! Again he too looked really strong, as he came in 2nd and moves up to Div.5.

Ben Gibbons, a newcomer to our racing team this year, has been promoted on every race where he has managed to stay in his boat. This Div.7 one was no exception. Ben is full of surprises!  During the course of the last short lap he spectacularly caught up almost a minute on the leaders and stormed in to win. 8 miles in Div 6 for him next time!

We only fielded one K2, Kellie and Wendy in Div.8 … which they won in fine style and only narrowly missed promotion.

4 firsts, 3 seconds 2 thirds: 5 promotions and two swimmers who both put up very brave performances in spite of their mishaps.  WELL DONE EVERYONE. Don’t forget to sign up for Maidstone on Sunday 17th June.
