Elmbridge Hasler Report and Results

It was a good day, thank you everyone for coming and providing such great competition all round. Thank you to those competitors in both sets of races who sacrificed their race to stop and help those who capsized; and of course, thank you to all our volunteers; without them the event could not happen.

We must apologise for the extended portage; unfortunately we have to rely on the goodwill of other river users to give us exclusive use of any particular area. Sometimes there is not much goodwill. Apologies too, to those whose results we are still trying to rectify.

It was good to see so many members turning out to race, and a very promising start to the new Marathon Racing season. Congratulations to all our new young recruits who were racing for the first time .Welcome on board kids !

The club achieved some good results, three 1st places, two 2nd places and three 3rd places , to mention but a few.

Well done to our four junior boys in Div. 2. They took the first four places and adding in Tom’s and Richards points in the same race, we scored a massive 99 points in Division 2.

Four of our paddlers were promoted Oscar Hynds and Kristina Kovacs from 8 to 7 , Leo from 6 to 5 and George Durden from 4 to 3. Great results for some our new members !

We were pleased to hear that so many of our visitors enjoyed their day at Elmbridge ..and were kind enough to let us know.

Henley Hasler 22nd September 2013

13 Elmbridge paddlers attended the annual Henley Hasler which tends to be held a week or two before the Hasler Finals, making it a great preparation race. The competition was mainly from the local clubs Reading, Banbury and Longridge. The majority of our paddlers finished their races with our star performer being Sean Marken Div 6, who had just been promoted out of Div 7 a few races back, and managed to race home in 3rd place to a promotion to Div 5. Well done Sean we knew you could do it !!! The junior girls and boys also did exceeding well, Luke Div3 came 2nd,  Jenny Div 4 (5th), Nick Div 4 (11th),  Becky  Div 5 (4th) and not forget the senior paddlers who consistently race to keep us on our toes.

Well done everyone, don’t forget Elmbridge Hasler 28th September.

Pangbourne Hasler Marathon: Sunday Sept.15th

2–  1sts   3– 2nds   2– 3rds  and 2 promotions .. well done !

This was the first Hasler Marathon of the 2013-14 season.

and also the one of the last chances to practice before the Final of the 2012-13 season.(Oct. 6th at Reading)

The southern region paddlers were certainly out in force and joined by many clubs from other regions .. including us.  It was a very busy event with huge start lines which, in some classes, even this beautiful wide stretch of the Thames struggled to accommodate.

We fielded a team of 20 paddlers and achieved some vey good results.  It was good to see Ed. Rutherford leading Div.1 in at the finish .. he has now left for Copenhagen with the GB marathon team to try for a World Championship medal in the Mens K1 event. Philip came 7th which was not surprising, given that the GB team and the Australian team were out practising.

Five of our paddlers started in Div 2. Glenn came 2nd .. Kayne came 3rd .. Ross Tom and Richard retired !  Stefano did an excellent race in Div 3 managing to hang on to the lead group for most of the way and finishing 5th… Elliot following in 10th place.  Jenny was our sole representative in Div 4.. she raced a determined race and finished first lady and 6th place overall.

Nicky Hadland in 5 was on a good day .. 2nd and promoted!

Becky finished 9th .. which is a much better result than it sounds. Seven paddlers in front of her were promoted (and were therefore too fast for that division) so, putting her performance into perspective, she was one of the best Div 5 paddlers.

Sean and Steve W in Div 6 were 9th and 15th respectively.

In Div 7 Leo Green was 3rd and Promoted to Div 6. James in 21st place ? .. was he protecting his place in the 4 mile race ???

Our K2s were a great success but we have no information as yet  about K2 promotion.  Beata and Liz were 2nd in Div.7 : Georgina and Georgia won Div 8 finishing 30 seconds in front of the second boat.  Well done girls .. keep it up for the Hasler Final.

If you feel you need more training there are just two more races before Hasler Final.  Next Sunday : Henley   Sept 29th: Elmbridge

Tonbridge Hasler 1st September 2013

This event was unusually crowded , over 200 competitors, on a very small river. Tonbridge organisers were stretched to the limit and had to resort to splitting up all singles starts but Divs I,2 and 3  into two: juniors first, followed by seniors, afterwards amalgamating them again for the results.

A further strategy was to start the top 3 divisions downstream of the town lock and keep them clear of all the other paddlers for the first part of their race.  The start times were successfully worked out to avoid congestion on the portage, which seemed much less hectic than usual .. probably because so many paddlers opted to use the slipway.

The paddlers all seemed to successfully complete their races: only the spectators were confused by the variety of courses.

Richmond turned out in force and took top position in the point scoring. We ran a fairly close second . Our best results in the higher divisions .. Phil 4th in Div 1 , Bruce winning Div 2 followed by Glenn in 3rd and Ross in 6th. In Div 3, Luke Stef and Elise came 5th 8th and 9th. In Div 4  Jenny did really well with a 4th followed by Tim in 6th .  Nick Hadland was 6th in Div 5 , Bex 11th in  7 and  Leo 17th : Georgina 12th in 8

Congratulations are due to some of our more mature adult paddlers : Steve Williams was 6th out of 13 in Div 6 and thoroughly enjoyed his 8 mile race, especially the start, without any juniors there to swamp him! Wendy and Liz in Div 7 K2 scored a massive 38 points when they took 2nd place.

This was the last Hasler race of the 2012-13 year. We still have Pangbourne, Henley and Elmbridge before the end of the actual year, but the points and qualifying races count for the 2013-14 season.  WHY NOT GET YOUR 3 QUALIFYING RACES IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FOR NEXT YEAR.
