National Marathon Racing Championship 2011

The Championships were hosted by Worcester Canoe Club who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure that the programme ran smoothly, information was readily available and everyone was well fed !

A big thank you to them for a very successful event.

Elmbridge fielded a very small team compared with most clubs, and were unable to cover all the classes, but even so, proved that we were a force to be reckoned with, especially as most of the points were scored by the junior paddlers. In the final count we were placed 6th and came home with a whole load of medals.

In the Senior Men K1 Edward Rutherford (previously a  Junior World Champion, but now primarily a sprint 1000m paddler)  took the bronze medal.   Phil Thorogood won the Mens Under 23 K1 and partnered by twin brother Glenn, also won the U23 K2. These were our only senior paddlers participating.

Kayne Wilkinson in U14 Boys K1 won in fine style with Elliot coming in 16th, still in the top half of a field of 38. Kayne partnered by Alex Khlaf of Richmond also won the K2.

The Under 16 boys really had to work hard for their results. Harry, Matt and Ross came 7th, 15th and 28th in a field of 41. When it came to the K2 race the next day Harry and Matt managed to stay with the leading group of four boats all the way round the race and take the 4th place . An excellent performance.  Ross and Elliot in the same race had a very hard time. They were swept into a concrete post on the bank by the surge of wash from the faster starters, trapped their bow behind the post, bent it round and thought they were out of the race. Then having ascertained that the boat was not actually leaking, and taking a few moments to recover from the shock, they set off again to chase the disappearing field. They finished a very creditable 10th out of 20.

The girls did very well for medals. Emily Illinessi partnered by Imogen Colling (RDG) took 2nd place in the U18 Girls K2. Amy Ward took gold in the U16 Girls K1, with Antonia coming in 16th. In the K2 they combined and won the bronze medal.  In the under 14 class Elise did very well to come 4th against some very tough looking competition. Roberta followed in 9th place. They teamed up in the K2 and they too took a bronze medal.

Last of the juniors, but by no means least, Becky Solway and Rebecca Williams asserted themselves in the U12 Girls. They took the silver and bronze medals in the K1 and finished a very convincing first in theK2.

From the “Friday Group” we should mention Mark (Lufkin).  Having watched all day Saturday he was fired up and wanting to take part in something. He did not have an entry, nor yet a boat, or even paddles. Undeterred, he managed to obtain all the necessary equipment (thanks again to Worcester Canoe Club) .  He boosted the point score by coming 5th in Division 8.  Wendy and Kelly had been working on their K2 for weeks , preparing for their Division 9 race, only to find that there were no other entries. Nevertheless they paddled in the Division 8 race and came a very respectable 4th. Well done girls !. Perhaps we could do with more enthusiastic racing adults!  &  finally in the mixed K2 race on Sunday we had Joanne Bates partnering Michael Wright from Falcon CC who came 3rd.
