Scott Hynds

I like most people started on a come and try session in the summer of 1986! The club had been going for only a few years and it was very different to how it looks now.  I first raced for Great Britain in 1988 in Hong Kong and raced for GB almost every year after that for a decade or so.  I was very fortunate to be competing and medalling internationally as a Junior in Sprint and Marathon and as a Senior in Marathon, and later in other paddle sports winning medals at European and World Championship level.

Highlights: Unfortunately in my time we didn’t have a junior Marathon World championships and the Worlds was every two years, in between we had the World Cup where I came 2nd in the Junior Mens K1, unfortunately that doesn’t get you on the board!! I medalled in two World cups as a Junior and as a Senior and won the Paddling challenge and completed DW twice and the Presidents cup – a 140mile K4 race!

I have also coached athletes from beginners to World & European championships as well as putting over forty coaches through the British Canoeing Discipline specific Race coach course and assessed nearly a dozen or so. This year I’ll become a mentor for the new BC Performance coach qualification.

I’m the BC Talent club partnership lead within Elmbridge CC, and I work independently with other TCP clubs doing outreach work and coach development. I have run national squad development weekends with the marathon JDS and run regional training days & camps.  You’ll find me at the club at 6:30am to 8pm coaching anyone who really wants to achieve the most they can.

For me the coaching I do has to be fun, worthwhile and everyone comes away with having learned something and with something to work on or towards.  I was very fortunate to train and compete with the world’s best for years and I want to share those life changing opportunities with another generation.  Plus, you can’t beat being out on the water with the sun on your back sitting in the V!
