NOT A GREAT START TO THE MARATHON SEASON !
Wey Hasler Marathon was postponed for a week due to floods. When the time came, some of our most competent paddlers were unable to do this event because they needed to attend the Assessment race at Bedford, in order to gain selection for British Marathon Teams. It was with a very depleted entry that we managed to achieve 5th place in the club rankings at Wey. Phil won Div 1 and a noteworthy performance from Jo Gannon earned him promotion to Div 6, a quick rise through the ranks for a paddler who only began canoeing last summer.
Our next London SE Region race was Hastings 1066. We put up a good entry with some rewarding results, taking first places in Divisions 1,2 and 3 with Philip, Ross and George (a new paddler in our ranks.. welcome George !) Glenn took 4th place in Div.2 : Katie, Steve and Bex,( in her first 8 mile race), all scored. In the 7,8,9 ranks there were some promising results from some of our newcomers. Robert, after a pile-up just after the start, managed to extricate himself and come 7th : Brooke bravely fought her way round the 4 miles to finish only about halfway down the field of 30 in her first race. Erica, also racing for the first time in U12s was disappointed with her result (a good sign that she will try even harder next time) Our position in this event was 3rd .. behind Richmond and Tonbridge.
The following weekend at Reading (a Southern Region Race at which we cannot score points)there was an excellent event.; a Hasler Divisional Marathon and yet another assessment race to finalise the selections for Marathon World Cup 1 and the European Marathon Championships. Stef was 2nd in Div.3, and George and Paul Rogers won Div 3 K2 : excellent performances from Robert and Brooke in Div. 8 and 9. Both pulled away and led their races off the start, followed all the instructions they had been given , took 2nd and 6th places respectively, and were promoted ! Amber and Erica paddled in the U12 girls Hody K2. They really took up the challenge; this determined effort earned them 2nd place.
Our current ranking in the league points after 3 races is 3rd
Please enter this series of races and help us to qualify for the final.
The remaining races in the LSE region for 2013-2014 are:
Maidstone Hasler 8th June
Royal Hasler 22nd June
Richmond Hasler 27th July
Tonbridge Hasler 31st August
Races outside of our region, therefore no points but qualifies are:
Thames Valley Hasler 13th July
National Championships Worcester 23rd -24th August
We have been deprived of the points that could have been scored by our top juniors because they have been obliged to race in assessment races in order to be selected for British Teams or development events abroad. These events have recently been held at Elmbridge , Bedford, Norwich and Reading.
Elmbridge paddlers Kayne and Luke took part in Amsterdam Marathon , taking 4th and 5th places in their junior boys class.
Becky Solway was chosen to go to Gent where she won the open ladies race.
Other events to come are World Cup 1, at which Luke has been chosen to take part, and the European Marathon Championships in Piestany where Ross and Elise will be competing in the junior classes. Both having done excellent K1 races at the Bedford event. At Reading Elise reinforced her position at the head of the junior Womens field with an impressive K2 performance. Amy and Sam put up an amazing challenge to Broughton and Lamph, the well established pair favoured for the ladies K2 spot in the GB Team. The Elmbridge/Basingstoke pair challenged throughout and fought for a win right up to the last seconds of the race, losing by less than half a length. Bad luck girls it was a such an exciting race to watch !
