Junior Come & Try Course

Courses are usually run monthly from April through to September and consist of two sessions per week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4.00pm-5.00pm.

This is suitable for children over 10 years of age and they are instructed on what to do by British Canoeing qualified and experienced coaches. They will start with land-based training before being taken onto the water where they will be taught how to paddle, steer and be safe on the river (and in it).

Although we provide buoyancy aids, or PFD’s as they are now known, being able to swim is still a safety requirement.

No specialist clothing is required, although we recommend something non-absorbent to paddle in and possibly a waterproof jacket or cag depending on the weather conditions. This is a water sport so please ensure they also bring a towel and a change of clothing as they will get wet! We recommend paddling in bare feet but it is also advisable to bring flip flops or sandals to walk from the club to the river.

On satisfactory completion of the Come & Try course, your child will then be eligible to join the canoe club in the Beginners Group.
